First chances for Youth Girls to play

Girls are keen to play footy with their local North West club.

THE AFL North West’s first foray into Youth Girls footy is forging ahead.

Four dates and venues have been selected for girls born in 2005, 2006 and 2007 to try their hand at playing a ‘Mini Series’ of football matches ahead of a shortened competition being played in June, July and August.

The upcoming dates for Youth Girls ‘Mini Series’ matches are:

  • Sunday, May 22 – 11.45am at Tamworth No.1 Oval, Tamworth
  • Sunday, May 29 – 11.45am at Varley Oval, Inverell
  • Saturday, June 4 – 10.45am at Wolseley Oval, Gunnedah
  • Sunday, June 19 – 11.45am at Bellevue Oval, Armidale

The days will involve a short skills session with AFL Development staff members before a shortened match is played.

Girls are invited to attend as many of the Mini Series days as they like. They’re also asked to to make an expression of interest in attending by clicking here and providing some brief details.

Matt Crawley, the Development lead for Northern NSW, said the Mini Series is a great opportunity for girls thinking of trying AFL to get involved.

“The four Mini Series days will be a fun way for girls who are both new to the sport or have some experience to learn new skills, meet some friendly people as well as get involved in some footy matches,” Crawley said.

“Once the Mini Series matches are completed, there’ll be a clearer picture of the number of girls who want to play and how many teams will be able to be a part of the very first Youth Girls competition.”

All girls are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the Mini Series start time to ensure AFL Staff members are aware of the number of girls who’ll be participating at each venue.
