Swans win local derby after the siren

ROUND 2 REVIEW: The Tamworth Swans have opened their season with a last gasp victory over local rival the Tamworth Kangaroos.

The Kangaroos led the local derby by three points with the siren imminent.

That was before Lachlan Bennetts-Inkster had a shot for the Swans after the siren to win the match.

Needing to kick more than 50 metres and accurately, the ball was in the best possible hands for the Swans as Bennetts-Inkster is the longest kick in the team.

The shot for goal sailed through and the Swans won a classic.

Both matches at the Tamworth No.1 Oval were close.

The women’s match saw the Kangaroos prevail by just eight points.

The Roos’ women jumped out of the blocks sharply and led by 33-points at the main break.

The second half was a different tale with the Swans controlling more of the play to kick five goals to one in the second half to get close.

The New England Nomads men recorded their first win of the season at Gunnedah.

By the time the rain arrived at Wolseley Park the Nomads were in control having raced out to a six-goal lead at quarter time.

Play was more even in the second term as the Bulldogs started to find their mojo but the Nomads kicked eight goals to two after the break to win comfortably.

Gunnedah’s women flexed its muscle in the club’s first home game of the season.

The Poochettes peppered the goals throughout while undermanned Nomads outfit continued to try its hardest and show that they’ll be a tougher nut to crack when some personnel returns.

Next week’s match between Inverell and Gunnedah, a replay of last year’s women’s grand final, promises to be a beauty.
