Hall’s famed Gillies Medal victory

Tamworth Kangaroos captain Matthew Hall is the winner of the 2023 Tony Gillies Medal.

Tamworth Kangaroos captain Matthew Hall’s excellent on-field performances in 2023 have been rewarded with the Tony Gillies Medal.

Hall was named as the AFL North West’s player of the season after the counting of the umpires votes.

The 24 year-old polled 22 votes to become the seventh Tamworth Kangaroos player to become a Gillies medallist, the first since Daniel Leon in 2016.

Hall polled seven votes in his final three games to finish six votes ahead of Noah Connick from the New England Nomads.

Connick started the count in hot fashion, polling 11 votes from his first four matches to build a lead ahead of the chasing pack. It was a margin that only Hall managed to haul in, taking the lead in the count after polling two votes in Round 12.

Connick finished the count with 16 votes, four ahead of Inverell’s Hayden Chappel who followed up his runner-up finish in 2022 with a third place finish this year.

Fourth place was three-way tie between the other three major award winners of the night.

New England Nomads goal sneak Fraser Menzies kicked 68 goals in the home & away season to win the Gerry Griffiths Medal as the competition’s leading goal kicker.

Gunnedah’s Adam Curgenven claimed the Coaches Award while Cooper Taveira, the 17 year-old from Inverell, was named as the AFL North West’s Rising Star.
